When Is Outsourcing The Only Option?
The decision as to whether or not a business owner should outsource any particular job is one of the most important decisions that could be made. This can be one of the most important and difficult decisions that any business owner could make irregardless of whether it is a large business or small.
But there may come a time when this decision has to be made for the survival, if not success of the business. In cases like this, the decision making process is greatly simplified. How could the decision be simplified?
The most obvious answer is when the in-house staff is not qualified for the task or when there just is not the manpower available to do the task at hand. Another aspect of this is when specific client requirements exceed the capabilities of the staff. In either case, the decision to outsource the project is the most obvious one.
The In-House Staff And Their Qualifications
When analyzing the qualifications of the in-house staff, a business owner may find that he has no one qualified to handle a particular task. This may occur when a task requires a highly specialized area of expertise or an advance degree in a particular field. This can be especially true in areas where the task is rare or an application has a very specific set of operating criteria. In cases like this, it would make little sense to hire someone into a full time positions that would only be used for a specific, and little used, ability. This would be expensive for the company and, in some ways, counter productive as well.
On the other hand, if this little used specialty becomes a much more in demand item then the issue of whether or not to outsource it becomes a muddled issue. But this article is not to explore these confusing issues, but to deal with those issues that deal with have to cases and no further.
Small companies, at one time or another, may face the difficulty of not having qualified personnel for a particular task. This issue is faced less often by larger companies, but occasionally, they too may run into it as particularly difficult tasks may arise. These larger companies have a greater pool of resources to draw from as opposed to the smaller ones.
In-House Staff Availability
Due to limited manpower availability, the decision to outsource becomes obvious. The workload may eliminate otherwise qualified people from working on a project. They may be busy doing multiple tasks and are under specific and unforgiving deadlines. With this in mind, outsourcing will not only be the best solution, but will also increase, if only temporarily, the manpower availability that the business may have.
The management is tasked with delegating these tasks to their employees. When they decide that their employees have reached their limits in what they can handle, they often will turn to outsourcing as their only viable solution.
The workload issue often becomes the reason for outsourcing. The employers and employees may have to prioritize tasks. They may have to prioritize among many tasks based on schedule and complexity as well as client demands. When these scheduling issues become a problem, outsourcing becomes a viable option to meet these demands.
The Client Requirements
Sometimes, the client requirements becomes so particular and complex that outsourcing becomes the only option. In cases like this, outsourced personnel with specific skills and qualifications may be required.
These specific skills may be in the form of specific training, knowledge of certain software programs, or previous experience not otherwise found. These particular skills may not be found by the owner in his or her in-house staff. In cases like this, the business owner may have no choice but to outsource the job.
In isolated incidents like this, businesses will often outsource these jobs. They make no efforts in maintaining employees with these skills. This would be an expensive and unproductive way for an employer to do business. Therefore, the wise decision, is to outsource these tasks.
