ID Theft – Protection From The New Brand Of Cybercrime
The Internet is indeed a marvelous place for scam operators for various reasons. It allows the criminals to reach out to people on a global basis without discrimination, it allows scam operators to operate as anonymously as they choose, and it allows them to work at great speeds and at various levels. That makes it very easy for the cyber criminals to strike. Nowadays, one of the most major ways in which cybercrime is manifesting itself is through identity theft. A person’s identity is the most personal thing he or she can have. Now, with the help of Internet devices, criminals are managing to steal even this most personal of people’s possessions. Quite a sorry state of affairs, really!
But there are ways whereby you can be one up on these identity thieves. Even if they are out to snatch your identity and use it for their own nefarious ends, you can very easily take steps to preserve what is your own. The following are some valuable tips and pointers using which you can shield yourself from the id theft cybercrime.
The first and foremost thing you need to do as soon as you get an Internet connection for your computer is to assign firewalls. Let your computer installer do it for you. These firewalls are protections for entryways into your computer. They are really like walls that prevent outsiders from freely entering into your own personal Internet network. With Windows operating systems, installing firewalls is quite a breeze, and you can do it yourself with a few clicks of the mouse.
For some applications, you will need to turn the firewall settings off, and they will prompt you to do so when installing. These applications could be the p2p applications that are used to share files over the Internet among other things. If you want to install such software, you will need to turn the firewalls off, but then you will have to do two things. Redefine the firewall settings as soon as the installation is done. And, go in the settings of the downloaded software and restrict access to public groups. You can keep access open to the public, but then at least you should never download anything that is not secure.
One of the most serious ways by which cybercriminals get into your PC is through spyware. In short, spyware are unwelcome programs that self-install on your PC, and then just sit there, probably relaying information from your PC to people monitoring the spyware. One of the ways through which they install is through popup ads and through adware. Spyware is dangerous, and you can consider it like a highway leading from your computer into the hands of cybercriminals. Once installed, spyware is very difficult to remove, and the biggest difficulty here is that you would not even know that a spyware has been installed. The best safeguard here is to install a spyware blocker, which would weed out spyware. Today, all major browsers have their own spyware protection methods, or you can manually configure spyware protection. Popup blockers are also important, because popup ads when clicked can install spyware. The same applies for blocking adware on the PC.
Be very careful of phishing emails. These are fake emails with links that are made to look very much like genuine websites. When you click on the links, you are taken to a website which is a copy of the original website. People are duped into giving sensitive information like passwords, usernames, account numbers, etc. Never ever reply to a dubious email, even if it seems to come from an authentic source. One way to ascertain its genuineness is to take a look at the URL. Very secure websites have https:// in their URL instead of the usual http://. Also, a URL which does not contain the name of the website is doubtful. In short, never respond to any mail with your private information in it, even if it “comes” directly from the company. It is better to call them up and check.
Finally, when dealing with the Internet, you have to be always vigilant. Remember that the Internet is not just about your PC. Even when you are locked up in your bedroom accessing the Internet, the whole world can know what you are actually surfing inside. Keep this one thing in mind, and you will be always protected from cybercrime
