Avoiding SEO Penalties Due To Plagiarism
In olden days, criminals were outcasts from society. In some cases, they were even excommunincated by the church. Website penalties are almost the same thing as being outcast. They (the sites) exist, but cannot be communicated with. In one very real way, they simply don’t exist to the Internet community we know.
How is this done? The search engines simply make sure that they do not show up in search results. Why? Some webmasters use what is sometimes referred to as black hat tactics to build their search rankings. One way that this is done is through plagiarism or duplicating someone else’s work and claiming it as one’s own.
The search engines take a very dim view of this practice and “punish” the offending website harshly. To them, copied material is simply that, copied material. While it seems certain that most know and understand that copying whole articles is plagiarism, most do not realize that copying sentences or parts of articles can also be considered plagiarizing. Search engines will skip duplicated content as a means of speeding up the search and results process. Nothing personal is meant by this practice, it’s just business. Remember that search engines are in the business of providing information as efficiently as possible. Otherwise, a search would yield hundreds of duplicate pages for a single search. It would be very inefficient.
On the other hand, there is an incredible amount of temptation for writers and webdesigners to copy other site text or article text. The pressure comes from deadlines that are getting shorter everyday. The competition in any given niche is made worse simply because the number of sites are so numerous and growing each day. This should be avoided at all costs.
For the most part, content duplication is an Internet no-no with offending sites being punished harshly. The only exceptions to this are news outlets and article directories.
Otherwise, duplication is strictly off limits to the average content writer. Duplication can and will attract the very crippling SEO penalties that have been the death of many websites. THey should be avoided at all costs in order to be successful online. A good rule of thumb to use is original content is KING.
Let’s look at some of the ways content writers can avoid SEO penalties in their work.
Write Original Content - I realize this point has already been made, but I cannot emphasize this point enough. Original content is KING. It is the only thing the search engines will accept. The only successful writer is the one who writes his own original content. He does not copy the work of others even when he is doing research.
Rework And Reword Content - If you are borrowing ideas from another source, make sure that you reword the content. This and reworking the content is another way to avoid plagiarism penalties. In this fashion the content is still the same, but in your words not theirs.
Change The Way Your Points Are Laid Out - If your article has a number of points to be made in it, another tip is to change the order in which they are made. Rephrasing them is also a good idea. Doing this is another good method of avoiding the SEO penalties.
Utilize Different Ghost Writers - Unless you are very good at writing yourself, you may find that you will be in need of articles to use to promote your site. A good idea is to hire different writers to do your writing for you. Assign each with different key words to allow for maximum originality. Hiring a qualified writer is not so expensive as it may sound.
Plagiarized work can never escape the watchful eyes of the search engines. But there are a number of clever ways to avoid being penalized that are perfectly legal. Your work will be counted as original. Remember, original content is KING.
